Marty Johnson

Marty Johnson, who brings a wealth of experience on the courts as a coach, player and administrator, was named the director of the Reis Tennis Center and director of tennis in August 2009. He has also served as an assistant coach for both the Big Red men's and women's varsity teams.

Johnson brings with him more than 30 years of experience coaching men's and women's tennis club teams. Included were nine USTA sectional team titles, two women's national semifinalists and three men's national semifinalists. Johnson was recognized by the South Dakota Tennis Hall of Fame as the Dominant Male Tennis Player for 20 years. From 2002-06, Johnson served as the varsity tennis coach for both the men's and women's teams at Orono High School in Orono, Minn. During his time as a private and high school coach, Johnson oversaw the development of 19 state high school champions.

Johnson also has a myriad of experience running tennis facilities, most recently serving as head tennis pro at Medina Country Club in Medina, Minn., while also serving as a tennis pro at Lifetime Fitness in Minnetonka, Minn., and as a private traveling coach out of Minneapolis. Among his other stops were as Director of Tennis at the Wayzata Country Club (Wayzata, Minn.), Westward Ho Country Club (Sioux Falls, S.D.), and the Woodlake Athletic Club (Sioux Falls, S.D.). As a player, Johnson has been nationally ranked in his age-group for three decades, winning 11 South Dakota Adult Closed titles and the South Dakota Adult Open title five times. He claimed three National Public Parks tournaments and two USTA Northern Section events. As a college player at South Dakota State, Johnson was a four-time Division II national competitor, reaching the quarterfinals as a senior. A 1974 graduate with a degree in commercial art and art education, Johnson holds dozens of awards and certifications as a coach by the USTA.

In addition to his duties as assistant coach, Johnson will also take over as Director of the Reis Tennis Center.
