Cornell Hangs Tough, Falls to Syracuse 10-8

ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell went toe-to-toe with one of the nation's top teams Tuesday night, but a late push fell short in a 10-8 loss to No. 3/4 Syracuse Orange women's lacrosse at Schoellkopf Field.

With the start time pushed from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. due to storms in the Ithaca area, rain held off until the final minutes, setting the stage for a tightly contested nonconference matchup that featured four lead changes and marked the closest meeting between the programs since 2016.

Cornell opened the scoring at the 12:23 mark of the first quarter with a goal by Lexie Tully off a feed from Emily Iacobellis, but Syracuse answered at 6:27 as Emma Muchnick finished a pass from Molly Guzik to even the score at 1-1. The Orange took their first lead on Alexa Vogelman's goal, before Lilly Whaling responded off an assist from Ella Wilmot to tie the game once again.

Emily Iacobellis gave Cornell its first lead with 1:58 remaining in the opening quarter, scoring off a pass from Whaling. Syracuse responded quickly, as Caroline Trinkaus scored unassisted to send the game into the second quarter tied at 3-3.
The Big Red carried that momentum into the second, with Kathleen Michaud opening the frame with an unassisted goal, followed by Ellie Bornhoeft adding another to give Cornell a 5-3 advantage. Trinkaus cut into the lead for Syracuse, but Michaud struck again—this time assisted by Bornhoeft—to restore a two-goal cushion at 6-4.

Syracuse closed the half strong. Mackenzie Borbi trimmed the deficit to one, and Molly Guzik scored unassisted with 1:31 remaining to tie the game at 6-6 heading into halftime.

The third quarter proved decisive, as Syracuse scored three unanswered goals. Joely Caramelli and Bri Peters each converted on free-position opportunities, and Guzik added her second goal of the night to give the Orange a 9-6 lead entering the fourth.
Cornell continued to battle in the final frame. Ellie Bergin cut the deficit to two with 7:24 remaining, finishing a feed from Wilmot. Trinkaus answered with her third goal of the game to push the lead back to three.

Lexie Tully added a late goal with 46 seconds remaining, but the comeback attempt ran out of time as Syracuse secured the 10-8 victory.

Michaud and Tully led Cornell with two goals apiece, while Iacobellis, Whaling, Bornhoeft and Bergin each added one. Wilmot paced the Big Red with two assists, as Cornell totaled 13 points on eight goals.

Defensively, Mackenzie Clark made eight saves over 60 minutes in goal, keeping Cornell within striking distance despite Syracuse holding a 22-15 edge in shots and an 18-11 advantage in shots on goal.

Cornell controlled the draw circle, winning 11 draw controls to Syracuse's nine, but the Orange capitalized on key chances, converting three of seven free-position attempts and holding a 13-5 edge in ground balls.

Despite the result, Cornell delivered one of its strongest performances against Syracuse in recent years, pushing a top-five opponent to the final seconds in a hard-fought battle.

Up next, the Cornell women's lacrosse team will head to Princeton, New Jersey for a road Ivy matchup on Saturday, April 4 with the first draw against the Tigers set for noon.
