ITHACA, N.Y. -- Former Big Red men's basketball captain Kevin App '07 has been named assistant men's basketball coach for the upcoming 2009-10 season. App replaces Zach Spiker, who was named the head coach at the United States Military Academy. Assistant coaches Nat Graham and Woody Kampmann were also promoted and will assume the top two assistant coaching roles under Steve Donahue, the Robert J. Gallagher '44 Head Coach of Cornell Men's Basketball.

"As a player, Kevin served a large role in helping turn this program around thanks to his attitude, energy and attention to detail," Donahue said. "As a coach, Kevin brings the same things to the table. His mental toughness, combined with the experience he had at Williams under head coach Mike Maker, make him someone I feel comfortable with bringing in so close to the season. He will have to hit the ground running, but I have high expectations for him. His knowledge of Cornell will be a major plus in recruiting and understanding the demands on our student-athletes, both on and off the court."

App spent the 2008-09 campaign as an assistant coach at Williams College, helping the Ephs to a 17-9 overall record and the program's first  Little Three title since 1996. He assisted in the development of Blake Schultz, a third-team D3hoops.com All-Northeast pick.

As a player, App was a four-year letter winner for the Big Red basketball team, earning the Rebounder's Club Award's Club Award in a vote of his teammates to recognize his hard work and leadership over his four seasons, and served as team tri-captain that same year. Originally a walk-on, he saw action in 45 career games with one start. He scored 29 points, dished off 10 assists, grabbed 10 rebounds and made five steals while hitting on 8-of-21 3-pointers. App earned the Rebounder. App scored a career-high 12 points with three rebounds against Ithaca College as a senior, hitting 3-of-4 3-pointers, and saw a career-high 20 minutes of action vs. VMI, dishing out five assists with two steals in the victory.

App has worked numerous basketball camps and clincs, including being involved in the Cornell summer basketball camps and also staffed the West Virginia camp.

After graduating from Cornell in 2007 with a degree in civil engineering, the native of Silver Spring, Md., worked for Clark Construction Company, LLC, in Bethesda, Md. He served one year as an office engineer before jumping into the coaching ranks.

Graham enters his fifth season on the sidelines for the Big Red, while Kampmann is in his third year. Both have played instrumental roles in Cornell winning consecutive Ivy league titles, a first in program history.

Cornell opens the 2009-10 season at Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 14 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Game time has yet to be announced.
