ITHACA, N.Y. -- After getting the 2009-10 season off to a great start, senior Ryan Wittman was named the Ivy League co-Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. Wittman shares the honor with Harvard senior Jeremy Lin.
Wittman's line of 23 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal doesn't tell the whole story, but it was a big reason why Cornell earned its first win over an SEC team in 37 years with a season-opening 71-67 victory at Alabama. The senior hit 7-of-11 shots, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and connected on all four free throws in the win. His first basket of the game, a 3-pointer, gave Cornell a lead it would never relinqush a minute and a half into the game. He then continously made big shots as Alabama was making a run. His 15-foot jumper from the wing pushed the lead back to five after the Crimson Tide had sliced a 15-point deficit to three with eight minutes left. He also hit four free throws in the final minute to secure the win. In all, Wittman had 14 of his points in the second half. His five 3-pointers moved him within eight of the Ivy League record for career treys.
Wittman and the Big Red return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass.
