Big Red Tennis Teams Take Handful of Titles in Invitationals

Junior Christine Ordway won "A" flight titles in both singles and doubles on Sunday, highlighting a strong weekend for the Big Red at the Cornell Fall Invitational at Reis Tennis Center. The Cornell men's team also had a successful weekend, capturing three titles at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational.

Ordway defeated teammate Ryann Young in the "A" Singles final in Ithaca, 6-4, 6-1, then paired with freshman Gabby Sullivan to win the "A" Doubles in another all-Cornell championship. The tandem topped teammates Sara Perelman and Young, 8-5.

Sullivan also won the "A" singles backdraw in a marathon match with NJIT's Monica Graff, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 11-9. Junior Sarah O'Neil finished fourth in the championship portion of the bracket.

The Big Red won the top three spots in the "B" Singles final with a trio of freshmen. Lauren Frazier beat classmate Nina Turudic in the final, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7, and Perelman rallied to defeat Binghamton's Marina Bykovskaya in the third-place match, 0-6, 6-2, 10-6. Freshman Courtney Malinchak finished second in "C" Singles, with junior Kirsten Kohagen beating Binghamton's Jen Fridman, 7-5, 6-1, for third place. 

Freshman Rosemary Li won the "C" Singles backdraw, also finishing second in the "B" Doubles bracket with O'Neil. Kohagen and Malinchak won the backdraw bracket.

The Cornell's men's team won three titles at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational. Freshmen Jason Luu and Kyle Berman captured singles championships, and the team of Venkat Iyer and Alex Sidney were tops in "B" Doubles. 

Luu, one of the 3-4 seeds in the "C" bracket, beat Columbia's Bert Vancura in straight sets in the final. Top-seeded Berman topped Ian Laster in the "E" bracket final, 7-5, 6-2. Iyer and Sidney topped Princeton's Matt Siow and Matt Spindler in the "B" doubles final, 8-2.

Sophmore Evan McElwain took second in "D" Singles, falling to Penn's Jeremy Court in a three-set final. Junior Zhongming Chen advance to the semifinals. Freshman Alex Sidney won the "B" Singles consolation bracket.
