Dena Tanenbaum won a pair of matches Friday to advance through the qualifier to the main singles draw of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional championship for women's tennis, hosted by Army.
Tanenbaum was seeded third in the qualifier, securing a pair of straight-set victories to move on. She defeated Binghamton's Alexis Tashiro, 6-3, 6-3, and St. Bonaventure's Marissa Brossard, 6-2, 6-3. Tanenbaum will face Sacred Heart's Gabi Kaldan in the first round of the main draw on Saturday.

Courtney Malinchak won her first match Friday, a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Niagara's Ashley Ta, before being eliminated in a tight 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 match against seventh-seeded Suzy Tan of Dartmouth.
Cornell has two entrants in the singles qualifying draw — freshman
Dena Tanenbaum, who has received the third seed, and sophomore
Courtney Malinchak. There are 32 women in the draw, with two victories needed to make the field of eight qualifiers to be added to the main singles bracket.
The doubles field was whittled to 16 on Friday, with all three Big Red entries being eliminated.
