Malinchak Wins Singles Title at NTC Invitational

NEW YORK — Sophomore Courtney Malinchak won the F Singles bracket title at USTA BJK NTC College Invitational on Monday, wrapping up the women's tennis team's three-day competition at the National Tennis Center in Flushing.
 
Malinchak defeated NJIT's Monika Graff in the finals, 6-0, 6-2, improving her record to 7-4 on the fall season. The Big Red will be idle next weekend before returning to the courts to wrap up its fall tournament season with the ITA Northeast Regionals from Oct. 19-23 at West Point, N.Y.
 
AFTER SUNDAY'S PLAY
Sophomore Courtney Malinchak has moved on to the F Singles finals of the USTA BJK NTC College Invitational as the Big Red women's tennis team completed play during the second day of the tournament at the National Tennis Center in Flushing.
 
Malinchak won her semifinal match on Sunday against Joan Cannon, 6-3, 6-3. She'll face NJIT's Monika Graff in Monday's final. The two other Big Red competitors to reach the semifinals of their respective singles brackets were defeated Sunday – Laila Judeh fell to Columbia's Crystal Leung in the C bracket, and Sara Perelman was ousted by Columbia's Amy Li in G Singles.
 
AFTER SATURDAY'S PLAY
Three members of the women's tennis team have advanced to the semifinals of their respective singles brackets, highlighting the Big Red's opening day at the USTA BJK NTC College Invitational at the National Tennis Center in Flushing.
 
Sophomore Courtney Malinchak won her first two matches Saturday to earn a spot in the F Singles semifinals. She defeated St. John's' Diamond Adams in the first round, 7-6(0), 7-5, before taking down Dartmouth's Julienne Keong, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Sara Perelman used a pair of tiebreaker victories to win both of her opening matches in straight sets. She defeated Dartmouth's Christina Danosi, 7-6(5), 6-0, and Delaware's Nataliya Naumova, 6-4, 7-6(4).
 
Freshman Laila Judeh is continuing her hot fall season, soaring into the C Singles semifinals with straight-set victories over Rutgers' Gina Li (6-2, 6-4) and third-seeded Laura Wiley of Brown (6-4, 6-0). Next up is a match with second-seeded Crystal Leung of Columbia.
 
Junior Ryann Young was the second seed in B Singles, defeating NC State's Nicole Martinez, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round before being eliminated by Princeton's Amanda Mulianwan. Freshman Dena Tanenbaum also advanced to the quarterfinals of D Singles. As the second seed in the bracket, Tanenbaum survived a 2-6, 6-3,(10-4) affair with Dartmouth's Suzy Tan before being ousted by Fordham's Sarah Ali.
 
In doubles, the nationally ranked pair of sophomore Lauren Frazier and senior Sarah O'Neil defeated Charleston Southern's Yvinne Hubler and Alexandra Walters, 8-5, to win its opener in the A bracket. Perelman and Tanenbaum also won their first match in C Doubles, topping Fairleigh Dickinson's Celine Maier and Egzona Morina, 9-7.
