Frazier/O'Neil Named to All-Ivy First Team for Women's Tennis

5/3/2012 2:40:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Sarah O'Neil and freshman Lauren Frazier have become the first Cornell women's tennis doubles team to earn All-Ivy League First Team honors, the league announced Thursday. O'Neil was also named to the All-Ivy Second Team for singles.

Frazier and O'Neil were the Big Red's exclusive No. 1 doubles team through the Ivy League season, posting an impressive 5-2  record against the other Ancient Eight's other top doubles teams. The success culminated with a sweep of ranked pairs April 27-29 — 48th-ranked Sol Eskenazi and Jules Rodin from Penn and 40th-ranked Hilary Bartlett and Lindsay Graff from Princeton.

The Cornell pair posted a 8-3 record overall, with all of their competition on the season coming at the No. 1 spot in dual matches. Their first match together was on March 3 against Fairleigh Dickinson — a 8-5 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson's Irina Dementyeva and Anna Rapoport.

O'Neil became the first Big Red singles player to be named to the second team since Elizabeth Googe in 2007. Ruxandra Dumirescu was given Honorable Mention the following season, but that category has since been eliminated.

O'Neil was used exclusively at the No. 1 singles spot for the Big Red, posting an 8-10 record in the spring with a 2-5 mark in Ivy League matches. She was 8-5 in fall tournament play. O'Neil excelled in some of her toughest matches of the season, posting a 3-0 record in matches against ranked opponents. She defeated UMBC's Kim Berghaus, ranked No. 111 at the time of their Feb. 4 match, then twice knocked off Princeton's Hilary Bartlett. She was recently named the team's most valuable player and most improved player for the 2011-12 season.

The Big Red wrapped up its season with a 9-10 overall record and a 1-6 mark in Ivy League play. No one on the team will be lost to graduation.
