PHILADELPHIA — The women's tennis team is off to a strong start at the Cissie Leary Invitational, with five singles competitors and all four doubles entries reaching the Round of 16 after the opening day of play Friday.
Senior
Christine Ordway won a pair of matches in straight sets, and senior
Sarah O'Neil and junior
Ryann Young defeated their respective second-round opponents after receiving an initial bye in Flight A Singles.
In Flight B Singles, freshman
Laila Judeh remained undefeated in her young collegiate career with a three-set victory over Elizabeth Sims after a first-round bye. She will take on Bowdoin's Chantalle Lavertu on Saturday. Also advancing to the Round of 16 on the other side of the bracket is sophomore
Lauren Frazier, who used a marathon 7-6, 4-6, 12-10 victory over Dartmouth's Suzy Tan to earn a Round of 16 date with Penn State's Sarah Henderson on Saturday.
In doubles, the Big Red was the only program to advance four tandems to the Round of 16. Ordway and freshman
Dena Tanenbaum toppled Penn's team of Julianna Rodin and Sol Eskenazi – seeded first in the the bracket and ranked 35th in the nation – in the second round. Cornell's own nationally ranked duo of O'Neil and Frazier, who hold down the 52nd spot, also moved on.
