Nemo Forces Schedule Changes For Cornell Athletics

2/7/2013 9:40:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- A nor'easter rumbling up the East Coast has caused Cornell athletics to shift around schedules for several events scheduled this weekend. The majority of events affected are road contests in areas expected to be hit hard by the powerful winter storm named Nemo.

Discussions with the teams and schools involved have gone on throughout the day, with the safety of the student-athletes, fans and friends of the teams and travel logistics being the main priorities. All schedules are subject to change.

The big schedule changes involve road events, particularly with women's basketball and women's ice hockey. Women's basketball has canceled its Friday game at Harvard after originally moving it up from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass. The game will instead be played Saturday at 6 p.m. Saturday's originally scheduled league game against Dartmouth has been moved to Sunday at 4 p.m. Women's hockey, meanwhile, will play at Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. on Friday instead of its original 7 p.m. puck drop. It will meet Princeton on Saturday for its regular scheduled 4 p.m. start.

Fencing was supposed to be at the Ivy League championships on Saturday at Harvard, but that event has been postponed with alternative dates being considered. Women's tennis was supposed to compete in the ECAC Indoor Tennis Championship at Columbia this weekend, but that event has also been canceled due to the impending storm.

In addition, both polo matches against Yale scheduled for this weekend at Oxley Equestrian Center have been canceled. Saturday's gymnastics meet is on as scheduled, but Yale and Southern Connecticut University are now no longer expected to travel for the meet.

The men's lacrosse scrimmage against Albany originally on the schedule for Saturday at 1 p.m. has been moved to Sunday at 1 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.

The men's basketball team played Friday night against Harvard as scheduled, but has postponed Saturday night's game against Dartmouth to Sunday at noon at Newman Arena. Men's hockey expects no changes to its weekend schedule.
