CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore
Lauren Frazier won the No. 5 singles match to clinch the women's tennis team's 4-3 victory over No. 71 College of Charleston on Tuesday, giving the Big Red the nation's best record at 10-0. It was the first time this season that Cornell has played a team ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
College of Charleston (7-7) swept the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Big Red went on to win four of the six singles matches to extend the best start in program record. Freshman
Christy Kung tied the score at 1 with an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over Irene Viana at the No. 6 position. Freshman
Dena Tanenbaum then gave the Big Red the lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Samantha Maddox at No. 3, then the lead was pushed to 3-1 with
Laila Judeh's 6-4, 6-4 triumph at the No. 4 spot.
The Cougars won the Nos. 1 and 2 matches to make the match close, but Frazier's 7-6, 7-5 victory over Olivia McMillan at the No. 5 spot proved to be the difference.
Cornell and Buffalo are the last two undefeated teams in the country, with the Bulls sporting a 9-0 record going into this weekend's match against Northn Illinois. The Big Red will attempt to become the nation's only 11-0 squad when it takes New Jersey Institute of Technology on 12:30 p.m. at Charleston Tennis Center. The match, which will serve as the Big Red's final non-league clash of the season, was added to the schedule this week.
