Women's Tennis Sinks Pittsburgh, 6-1

3/9/2013 4:22:00 PM

PITTSBURGH – The women's tennis team continued to roll Saturday with a 6-1 win at Pittsburgh. The victory gives Cornell its first 6-0 start since 2008, and leaves it one win away from tying the best spring start in program history.

The Big Red started off the day with the doubles point, despite a loss at the No. 1 spot from its All-Ivy League pairing. But the point had already been clinched by that point by victories from the No. 2 tandem of senior Christine Ordway and junior Ryann Young, 8-5, and the No. 3 pairing of freshmen Christy Kung and Dena Tanenbaum, 8-2. The Big Red is now 15-2 in doubles in dual matches.

Cornell then rolled to straight-set victories in the first four singles matches played to completion to secure the match. Senior Sarah O'Neil dropped the fewest games on the day, defeating Pitt's Taylor Washington at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-3. Ordway (No. 2), Tanenbaum (No. 5) and Young (No. 3) followed suit, and Cornell was ahead 5-0 before the Panthers got their lone point on the day. Sophomore Lauren Frazier then wrapped up the day by outlasting Molly Wickman in a marathon match at the No. 6 position, 6-7, 7-6, (10-5).

The Big Red victory came against a familiar face, as Pitt's interim coaching staff of Michaela Kissell-Eddins and Jacob Eddins were assistants with Cornell last year.

The Big Red is back in action at Alpha Tennis and Fitness at 10 a.m. Sunday, when takes on Duquesne.
