ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell guard Darryl Smith has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week after a strong conference debut this past weekend at Columbia. Smith is the second Big Red freshman to earn the honor this season.

Smith came off the bench in his first Ivy League game and provided quality minutes in the Big Red's 71-61 loss at Columbia. Smith played 32 minutes and was largely responsible for triggering runs in both halves to keep Cornell within striking distance of the Lions. He had eight points and four rebounds in the second half and was part of a defensive effort that held the Ivy League's best three-point shooting team to 5-of-17 shooting, including 2-of-14 with him on the floor. Smith finished the game with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.

Smith has been on the rise in his last five games, averaging 7.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists while shooting .484 (15-of-31) from the floor. Those are all above his season averages of 4.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists on .467 shooting.

The Big Red, including Smith, will face Columbia on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 12 p.m. at Newman Arena.
