AKRON, Ohio — The women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Akron Invitational with a nine-match sweep on Sunday, including six singles matches against UMKC and three doubles tilts against host the host Zips.
The Akron Invitational does not use a bracket format like the majority of fall tournaments. Instead, teams will match up against one school in singles and another in doubles on each day of the event. There is no team scoring.
Cornell opened play on the third day of the event with six straight-set victories against the Kangaroos. Junior
Alexandra D'Ascenzo (No. 2) and senior
Dena Tanenbaum (No. 3) won their respective matches, 6-1, 6-1, and sophomore
Lizzie Stewart was even more thorough in her 6-0, 6-1 triumph from the No. 6 spot.
Matches were closer in doubles against Akron, but the Big Red ultimately won each without tiebreakers needed. D'Ascenzo and Tanenbaum were the most efficient with a 6-3 decision at the No. 1 position.
Cornell is now 22-4 in doubles and 40-12 in singles over its three seasons competing in this event. The Big Red will take a couple weeks off from competition before wrapping up its fall season at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Dartmouth.
