ITHACA, N.Y. -- Two Cornell captains earned All-Ivy League honors and junior punter
Chris Fraser became a rare three-time first-team pick when the conference announced the conference awards on Tuesday afternoon. The teams were voted on by the league's eight head coaches.
Fraser is just the sixth Cornellian to earn first-team All-Ivy honors three times, joining offensive lineman Kevin Boothe (2003-05), linebacker Bob Lally (1971-73), running back Chad Levitt (1994-96), running back Ed Marinaro (1969-71) and quarterback Gary Wood (1961-63). One of 11 unanimous first-team selections, he ranked fourth in the FCS and first in the Ivy League in punting average at 45.1 yards per kick. It was the third straight year Fraser led the Ivy League in punting average - each year by at least two full yards per punt. He posted a single-game school record 52.4 yards on seven punts with three punts of longer than 60 yards with two inside the 20, against Harvard. Despite punting into the wind on seven of his eight kicks, averaged 41.2 yards with one kick inside the 5 in the Big Red's 3-0 victory over Columbia. Fraser had 16 punts of longer than 50 yards and pinned nine kicks inside the 20.
Hagy, a second team pick as a junior and an honorable mention selection as a sophomore, became the first Ivy League football player to reach 2,000 rushing, 1,500 receiving yards in a career. He also became the first Cornell player to lead the Big Red in rushing all four seasons as well as the first player in school history to average at least 100 yards from scrimmage per game in all four years. Hagy ranked third in the Ivy League in rushing despite missing one full game, a quarter of a second and all but one play of a third (equivalent of 2 1/4 games). Despite that, he still had had four 100-yard rushing games, including 117 yards against Yale and 128 yards at Princeton. Hagy posted 121 rushing yards on just 11 carries with two touchdowns against Patriot League champion Colgate and ended the season with five touchdowns. He ended his Cornell career in the top five at Cornell all-time in all-purpose yardage and top 10 in rushing, touchdowns, receptions and receiving yards.
Fives earned a spot on the second team, the first All-Ivy honor for one of the Big Red's senior captains. He ended his senior season with 52 tackles, ranking fourth in the Ivy League in sacks (4.5) and fifth in tackles for loss (8.0). Over his final five contests, Fives posted 27 tackles with 6.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Fives had seven tackles with a sack in the Big Red's shutout of Columbia and made three tackles with a sack at Yale. He matched a career high with nine tackles, including a single-game best two sacks, at Dartmouth and a combined three tackles for loss in games against Princeton and Brown. Fives also made a career-high nine stops with one tackle for loss against Patriot League champions Colgate.
Cornell finished the season 1-9 with a win over Columbia for the Empire State Bowl, dropping three contests to conference champions (Colgate - Patriot; Dartmouth, Harvard and Penn - Ivy League).
