Frimel, Gellatly, Hope Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell football team placed three student-athletes on the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-District team, with seniors Kurt Frimel, Jack Gellatly and Seth Hope all advancing to the national ballot that will make up the Academic All-America team. Hope, a second-team Academic All-American a year ago, and Gellatly are each making their second straight appearance, while Frimel is being recognized for the first time.

A team captain, Frimel was an All-Ivy League candidate after leading the team and ranking fourth in the Ivy League in tackles for loss (9.5). He ended the year with 55 tackles, two sacks, two pass breakups and a forced fumble in nine games. The three-year starter and letter winner compiled 148 tackles, 16.5 for a loss and 4.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and four pass breakups. Frimel had three tackles for a loss in games against Delaware and Colgate, posting a pair of sacks against the Patriot League champion Raiders. Frimel forced a fumble and had seven total stops with one for a loss against Ivy champ Yale.

Gellatly, who also served as a team captain in 2017, was a swiss-army knife on offense as both a tailback and fullback. The senior piled up 253 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground, 28 catches for 180 yards through the air and caught a two-point conversion throw. Gellatly played in 33 career games and accumulated 542 rushing yards while scoring twice and hauled in 44 passes for 332 more yards. He had seven carries for 74 yards and a touchdown, including a career-long 60-yard run, in the win over Brown and had 23 total touches in a win over preseason Ivy favorite Harvard. His 28 receptions and 253 rushing yards both ranked third on the team.

Hope, a defensive end, made 29 tackles with three coming for a loss, two sacks and a forced fumble while playing in all 10 contests. He will graduate having played in each of his final 36 contests, making at least one stop in each game. A two-year starter and four-year letter winner, Hope had 112 career tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. As a senior, the Fort Thomas, Ky. native had a season-high eight tackles in the season finale at Penn and had four stops, including 1.5 for a loss, a sack and a forced fumble, against Columbia. Hope also had a sack in the win over Brown.

In all, 19 Ivy League football players reached the Academic All-America ballot. Cornell had five named to the team a year ago, including both Gellatly and Hope.
