ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's lacrosse team scored the most goals in a game by a Big Red squad in two decades and led from wire-to-wire to pick up the program's 750th win in a 23-5 victory over Air Force on Tuesday evening at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red took the victory for the fourth time in five outings in improving to 5-3 overall, while the Falcons fell to 3-7.
"It's really a humbling thing," said interim head coach
Peter Milliman. "Knowing the tradition and history of this program. It's such a special place. We talk about it all the time, how unique it is to be a part of a tradition that's this rich. It's humbling to have an opportunity to be a part of some of these wins and try and continue the legacy."
Twelve different Cornell players scored and 15 registered a point as the Big Red scored its most goals in a game since posting a 23-2 home triumph over Canisius in the season finale of the 1998 campaign, the program's first under head coach Dave Pietramala. The 2018 edition finished just four goals off the school record of 27 set against Syracuse during the 1974 campaign. In the process, the Big Red became just the seventh Division I lacrosse program to 750 wins.
"I thought it was a good team game," said Milliman. "It was a good team effort in tough conditions against an athletic, physical team ... We talked about not having a letdown after a big win on Saturday."
Jeff Teat, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, had seven points (three goals, four assists), leading 12 multi-point scorers for the Big Red.
Clarke Petterson (three goals, two assists),
Colton Rupp (three goals, one assist) and
John Piatelli (three goals) each finished with a hat trick.
Paul Rasimowicz won 18-of-24 face-offs and picked up a season-high eight ground balls, extending his current streak to five consecutive games above .500 in the faceoff circle.
Defensively, the Big Red was outstanding, limiting Air Force to just 19 shots (11 on goal) and causing seven of the Falcons' turnovers.
Jake Pulver was particularly impressive as he shut down AFA's top scoring threat, holding Nick Hruby scoreless. Hruby eventually scored a late goal after Pulver had left the game.
Behind the defense, sophomore goalie
Caelahn Bullen picked up his second straight win while making his first career start for the Big Red.
Cornell held the significant advantage in shots (37-19), shots on goal (30-11), ground balls (35-18), and face-off wins (21-of-31). The team also allowed Air Force to clear the ball successfully just 9-of-17 times.
