Biography

In 2013-14 (senior)
After missing two seasons due to injury, Matthews was one of the Big Red's most consistent players throughout the year. He averaged 4.2 points, 1.0 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 0.8 steals in 17.3 minutes per game as the team's top reserve guard. Matthews scored a career-high 17 points with three rebounds and three steals at Brown and notched 13 points in the Ivy League win over Dartmouth. He averaged 7.5 points and 1.5 steals in two games against Columbia, hitting 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Matthews had four points at both Notre Dame and defending NCAA champion Louisville and scored eight points with three rebounds against Yale. Matthews ranked fifth in the Ivy league in steals in Ivy league contests with 17 in the team's 14 games.

In 2010-11 (freshman)
In 21 contests, including 11 starts, Matthews averaged 1.4 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 8.9 minutes per game. He made his collegiate debut at Seton Hall and scored three points, dished off four assists and didn’t commit a turnover in 22 minutes off the bench for the Big Red. He also connected on his first career 3-pointer in the loss. Matthews played 14 minutes off the bench in a win over Southern Conference champion Wofford, grabbing two rebounds and dishing off an assist. He had three points in 10 minutes off the bench at Columbia, as well as three points at home against the Lions. He recorded six points and three rebounds at Harvard and a career-best 10 points in a win over Dartmouth.

At Greensburg-Salem HS
A McDonald’s High School All-America nominee as a senior at Greensburg-Salem HS, Matthews was a two-time all-section pick. As a senior captain, Matthews averaged 19.7 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. He made 59 3-pointers and closed his career with more than 1,200 points. After the season, he was invited to play in the Pittsburgh Roundball Classic All-Star game and earned a spot on the 2010 Hoops for a Cure All-Star team and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette East Fab 5 squad. A three-year starter. he was named to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Terrific 10 All-Star team as a junior after averaging 16.1 points for the state runner-up squad. He made 73 3-pointers on the year and connected on 39 percent from beyond the arc. He earned the school’s sportsmanship award and helped his varsity squad compile an 84-21 record in his four seasons. Matthews was also a star on the track team, competing in the high jump, long jump and 400 meter sprints.

Personal
Jacob Andrew Matthews is the son of Bernie and Brenda Matthews and has an older brother and sister. His brother, Paul, played basketball at Washington & Jefferson. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
