The Cornell men's soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 2-1 loss to Fairfield on Friday evening in the opening game of the Hartwick College 50th Anniversary Tournament.
Fairfield went ahead in the 13th minute as Alex Cunliffe scored on a feed from Steve Desmond. The Stags would make the lead 2-0 on Sam Bailey's goal five and a half minutes after halftime.
Kyle Lynch got the Big Red on the scoreboard nearly three minutes later, heading home Miyad Movassaghi's free kick from the right side of the penalty area, but Cornell could not find the equalizer in the final 35 minutes of the match.
Jon Paul Francini made three saves in collecting the win for Fairfield, while Cornell sophomore Luca Cerretani picked up three saves in his first collegiate action.
The Big Red closes out the tournament on Sunday with a 12 p.m. contest against Hartford in Oneonta, N.Y.
