LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Junior David Browning scored a first-half goal that would turn out to be the game-winner as the Cornell men's soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 2-0 victory over Kentucky in the opening round of the UK Nike Soccer Classic.

Browning's goal came in the 23rd minute as the junior finished off a rebound, heading the ball into the back of the net. The Big Red withstood a direct Kentucky attack to carry the 1-0 lead into the half.

Cornell got an insurance tally with 14 minutes remaining as Matt Bouraee collected the ball on a break and slotted a shot underneath Kentucky goalkeeper Dan Williams.

The Big Red (1-0) withstood the Wildcats' attempts to get on the scoreboard as the Big Red claimed its third straight shutout, dating back to the final two games of the 2006 season. Junior goalkeeper Luca Cerretani made five saves for his fifth career clean sheet.

Williams picked up 13 saves for the Wildcats in a losing effort.

Cornell will try to claim the UK Nike Soccer Classic title on Sunday as the Big Red takes on IUPUI in a noon contest in Lexington, Ky. IUPUI was a 4-3 loser to UNC-Asheville in the tournaments opening game on Friday afternoon.
