LEWISBURG, Pa. -- A Bucknell goal with 21 seconds remaining in the first overtime period sent the Cornell women's soccer team to a 1-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon in Lewisburg, Pa. The Big Red falls to 4-4 on the season with the defeat, while Bucknell improves to the same mark.
Cornell dominated the first half, firing off 10 shots to Bucknell's four, but the Big Red was held at bay by seven saves from Bucknell goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton. In the second half, momentum switched as the Bison peppered Cornell goalkeeper Jodi Palmer with eight shots, but the freshman was up to the task, picking up five saves.
The finish of Sunday's game came in similar fashion to Cornell's 2-1 overtime victory over Niagara on Friday evening at Berman Field. In the overtime session on Sunday, with time running down, the Bison were awarded a throw-in in the Cornell end. Chelsea McGorry threw the ball to Kelliann Doherty, and Doherty fired a shot into the right side netting of the goal.
Palmer picked up six saves in taking the loss for Cornell, while Sutton made eight stops in net for the Bison. Sophomore forward Eva Dixon had a team-high five shots for the Big Red.
Cornell opens up Ivy League action on Friday, Sept. 28, traveling to Penn for a 7 p.m. contest against the Quakers. The Big Red returns home a week from today on Sept. 30 to face Colgate in a 1 p.m. contest.
