ITHACA, N.Y. -- Scott Caldwell scored his second goal of the season, but the Cornell men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 contest to Penn State on Wednesday night at Berman Field. The loss sends the Big Red to 1-9 on the year, while Penn State improves to 4-7-2.

The Nittany Lions got on the board in the 19th minute as a Cornell turnover came to Treavor Gelsinger, who turned and fired a shot past goalkeeper Scott Lesser to give Penn State a 1-0 lead going into the half.

Penn State then added a pair of insurance goals late in the contest as Gelsinger again found the back of the net, this time heading home a cross from Casey Derkacz in the 85th minute. A minute and a half later, MacKenzie Arment was the beneficiary of an unlucky bounce for the Big Red. Matheus Braga fired a shot that Lesser parried to the side and off the goalpost and off to Matt Stengel. Stengel then tried clearing the ball, but it went right to Arment, who fired a shot that bounced off of Lesser and trickled into the back of the net.

Cornell got on the board with a second and a half remaining in the game as Caldwell blasted home a shot from the far post after a cross by Stengel was flicked on by Joe Yonga to the oncoming Caldwell.

Lesser made six saves in taking the loss in his first action of the season, while Liam Fitzwater made two saves for the Nittany Lions.

Cornell returns to action on Saturday, taking on Yale in a 7 p.m. contest at Berman Field.
