Volleyball Continues Strong Ivy Play with Win at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Big Red volleyball team won a 3-2 nail biter at Harvard on Friday night, winning a 16-14 deciding fifth set. Cornell improved to 4-1 in the Ivy League, while the Crimson fell to 2-3. Freshman Meagan Tatum led the Big Red with 18 kills, while senior Hilary Holland registered a career-high 54 assists. Rookie Kelly Hansen made a career-high 12 block assists.

The Big Red and Harvard were tied at 15 all before Cornell charged on to a 25-19 win in the first set. Hansen recorded four block assists and senior Kathryn Woodbury added three. Junior libero Megan Mushovic recorded six digs.

The Crimson held a slight lead throughout the second set, and edged ahead to a 25-20 win. Erin McCarthy tallied five kills and Holland made 14 assists. Harvard hit .464 as a team in the set.

The two teams were tied at nine early in the third set until the Big Red pulled out to lead and never looked back. Tatum made six kills in just 10 attempts to hit .500. Hansen notched three block assists for the Big Red defense, and the Cornell offense combined to hit .417 for the set.

Harvard took a 14-10 advantage in the fourth set on to a 25-19 win. Mushovic grabbed eight digs, and Hansen made three block assists.

In the fifth set, Cornell had a 14-8 lead, but Harvard pulled back to tie the match at 14 all. Hansen notched a big kill, and combined with Woodbury on a block to help the Big Red win the match. Borman notched had four kills in four attempts in the set.

Borman totaled 13 kills to hit .500 in the match and added three block assists. Woodbury recorded nine kills and seven block assists. Freshman Risa Ka'awa tallied a career-high 10 digs for Cornell's back row.

Harvard was led by Kathryn McKinley with 17 kills. Anne Ingersoll had 16 kills, while hitting .455 and added nine blocks. Katherine Kocurek led the Harvard back row with 19 digs.

The Big Red will be back in action on Saturday afternoon playing at Dartmouth.
