BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Long Island edged out the Big Red volleyball team, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Recreation Wellness and Athletics Center in non-conference action. Cornell was led by Emily Borman who totaled 14 kills while hitting .591
The Big Red (3-8) and the Blackbirds (8-8) were close throughout the first set and were tied at 19. Long Island pulled out to a 25-22 advantage to win the set. Senior Hilary Holland and freshman Kelly Hansen teamed up for two blocks.
In the second set, Long Island jumped out to a 15-10 lead and continued on to a 25-19 victory to go up two sets. Junior libero Megan Mushovic had seven digs in the win.
The two teams were close again in the third set and were tied at 15 all. The Big Red pulled within a set with a 25-20 win. Borman notched five kills in just seven attempts to hit .714 for the set. Mushovic tallied 11 digs for the Big Red back row.
Long Island quickly took the lead in the fourth and deciding set and with a 25-17 victory to win the match.
Mushovic totaled 25 digs in the match for the Big Red defense and Hansen notched seven blocks. Holland registered 25 assists, 11 digs and three block assists, while freshman Jordan Reeder tallied 10 digs.
The Blackbirds were led by Svetlana Simic with 16 kills and 16 digs. Martina Racic added 12 kills and 23 digs. Setter Chelsey Stanton notched 41 assists, seven digs and three blocks.
The Big Red will play host to Penn and Princeton next weekend in Newman Arena.
