Penn Inches Past Volleyball, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—
The Big Red volleyball team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker on Saturday night at the Palestra in a match that came down to extra points in the first and fifth sets. Freshman Meagan Tatum notched 17 kills for Cornell while hitting a season-high .417. Fellow freshman Kelly Hansen led Cornell at the net with 11 total blocks.

Cornell (7-14, 6-4 Ivy) and Penn (10-11, 6-3 Ivy) were tied throughout most of the first set, battling back and forth for the lead. Penn saved two match points late in the set, and with a Cornell service error and an ace from Kathryn Turner, won 29-27. Senior Emily Borman had six kills in just nine attempts to hit .556, while Hansen was 4-for-5 hitting .800. Cornell as a team hit .306.

Cornell took an early lead in the second set and steamrolled on to a 25-11 win. The Big Red held Penn to a -.033 hitting percentage, while Cornell hit .407 with only one attacking error.

The Big Red held an advantage throughout the third set and moved on to a 25-17 victory. Borman had four block assists, while Tatum went 4-for-5 to hit .800.

Penn regrouped in the fourth set and played on to a 25-20 win. The Quakers took an early lead in the fourth, but the Big Red battled back to tie the set twice. Tied 14 all, Anne Magnuson tallied a kill and with an ace by Julia Swanson, Penn won the deciding set, 16-14. Hansen had four block assists, while Kathryn Woodbury added three.

Borman joined Tatum to lead the Big Red hitters with 13 kills while hitting .417, and sophomore Erin McCarthy added 11. Hansen added eight kills to her 11 blocks. Junior libero Megan Mushovic led the Cornell back row with 25 digs, and freshman Jordan Reeder added 12. Senior Hilary Holland tallied 48 assists with 11 digs and three aces. Woodbury notched nine block assists.

Magnuson led the Quakers with 14 kills, while Turner and Swanson each added 13. Libero Madi Wojchichowski set a new school record with 40 digs for Penn.

Cornell had 17 total blocks, while Penn had five.

The Big Red will remain on the road next weekend as it travels to Brown and Yale.
