ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red volleyball team defeated Dartmouth, 3-1, on Friday night in front of a crowd of over 1,400 people in Newman Arena. Four Cornell hitters recorded double digit kills, with sophomore Erin McCarthy leading the way making 14. The Big Red also played host to Dig Pink, an event to raise money for breast cancer research.
Cornell welcomed donations and also raised funds with raffle tickets. Fans can still support the Big Red's efforts by contributing online from Cornell's event site.
Dartmouth held a 22-15 lead in the first set before the Big Red rallied to come within a point at 22-20. The Big Green hindered Cornell's comeback hopes to win 25-23. Senior Kathryn Woodbury had four kills in just six attempts to hit .667. Senior captain Hilary Holland had 14 assists, and freshman Jordan Reeder added five digs for the Big Red defense.
The two teams traded points back and forth in the second set, but Cornell pulled out to a 25-22 victory. Freshman Kelly Hansen, McCarthy and Woodbury all had four kills for the Big Red. Mushovic and Holland each had seven digs.
Cornell and Dartmouth held the score close again in the third set, and the teams were tied at 14-14. The Big Red hitters then switched gears on their way to a 25-19 victory. McCarthy and Woodbury each had four kills to help the Big Red hit .343 as a team. Hansen and Woodbury each had three block assists, and the Cornell defense held Dartmouth to a 0.094 hitting percentage.
The Big Red jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set and never looked back on its way to a 25-17 match-deciding victory. Sophomore Alessa Cekauskas notched six kills in just eight attempts to hit .625 for the set, and helped lead the Big Red to a .400 hitting percentage. Senior Emily Borman had three more block assists, and Holland had 10 assists and six digs.
McCarthy had 10 digs to add to her 14 kills, and Woodbury totaled 13 kills hitting .462. Hansen added 12 kills with a .550 hitting percentage, and Cekauskas notched 11 kills. Holland finished the match with 51 assists and 17 digs. Borman led the Big Red at the net with seven block assists, and Mushovic led the back row with 19 digs.
Dartmouth was led by Jess Thomas with 14 kills, and Megan MacGregor and Madeline Baird added 11 and 10, respectively. Libero Amber Bryant had a match-high 22 digs.
Cornell will play its final match of the 2008 season on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Harvard. The Big Red will honor its three seniors before the start of the contest.
