ITHACA, N.Y. -- Three second half goals broke open a one goal halftime deficit as the Cornell men's soccer team dropped its home opener on Wednesday to Albany, falling by a 4-0 score. The loss sends the Big Red to 0-5 on the year, while Albany improves to 4-2 on the season.
Albany got on the scoreboard with just under five minutes to go in the first half as Bjorn Bekkers, who had just come on as a substitute, banked a shot from 20 yards out off the far post and into the back of the net as the Great Danes took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Albany's Ian Peach made the score 2-0 in the 55th minute when he took a cross from Luuk Collou and finished a shot in traffic and over an oncoming goalkeeper
Scott Brody. In the 66th minute, Albany was awarded a penalty kick after a player was taken down in the penalty area, but Brody correctly dove to his left to make the diving stop and smothered the rebound, but a minute later, Albany's Claudio Dantas finished home a near-post header off a corner kick from Gaby Seguin-Gauthier.
Albany's Mikael McNamara finished off the scoring with a one-touch goal off the near post in the 78th minute.
Brody made three saves while allowing three goals in 78 minutes, while
Luca Cerretani allowed the fourth goal without making a save. Albany's Adrian Foncette made three stops in his first career victory.
Cornell returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Lafayette for a contest on Sunday in Easton, Pa.
