ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red volleyball team lost a 3-1 heartbreaker to Connecticut on Friday night at the UConn Toyota Classic. Freshman Meagan Tatum led the Cornell offense with nine kills, while junior libero Megan Mushovic totaled 27 digs for the Big Red defense.
The Huskies (8-4) grabbed a 25-16 victory in the opening set to take a quick lead over the Big Red (0-4). Cornell and Connecticut traded points back and forth in the second before Emily Borman, Kelly Hansen and Alessa Cekauskas joined up to post two big blocks to take a 27-25 win. The Huskies took back the match lead in the third with another 25-16 win. In the fourth set, Cornell and Connecticut once again remained close throughout the set, but the Huskies inched ahead late to pull out a 25-22 victory to win the match.
Senior captain Hilary Holland totaled 28 assists while adding 12 digs. Sophomore Erin McCarthy notched six kills for Cornell, while Tatum had seven digs with her nine kills.
Lauren Lamberti led the Huskies with 15 kills, while Chauntay Mickens totaled 12. Annie Luhrsen had 46 assists with 17 digs. Megan Frey posted a match-high five blocks for the Connecticut defense.
The Big Red will be back in action Saturday morning when they will face Temple at 10 a.m., before playing Maine at 5 p.m.
