Friday Doubles
FLUSHING, N.Y.—The Big Red men's tennis team found success in singles and doubles play on Friday at the USTA Men's College Tennis Invitational at the National Tennis Center. Marc Asch has advanced to the semifinals in singles IV, while Andy Gauthier and Connor Sherwood will both play in the semis of singles VI on Saturday afternoon. In doubles III, Gauthier teamed up with Jeremy Feldman to play into the quarterfinals and are joined by the duo of Jon Fife and Jonathan Jaklitsch.
In singles I, Kyle Doppelt lost to Jonas Berg, but advanced over Peter Capkovic of Providence in the consolation brackets. He will play Yale's Mike Caldwell on Saturday morning.
Jonathan Jaklitsch opened his day by defeating Alejandro Calligari, 6-4, 6-1, in singles II. Jaklitsch then narrowly lost to Boston College's Thomas Nolan (6-0, 2-6, 6-3). He will play Billy Mertz on Saturday. Also in singles II, Josh Goldstein won his opener over St. Joseph's Asaf Honig (6-3, 1-6, 6-3), before losing to Fairleigh Dickinson's Matt Gordon, 6-2, 7-6 (2). Goldstein will next face Robert Rotaru.
In singles III, Fife fell to Harvard's Michael Hayes (7-6 (5), 6-1), before playing past Brown's Kendrick Au, (6-2, 6-3). He will play Columbia's Hari Schneiderman on Saturday morning. Jeremy Feldman also dropped his opening match to Columbia's Ekin Sezken, (6-3, 6-2), but he picked up a win in his second match over Marist's Loic Sessagesimi, 6-2, 3-0 ret. He will play Noah Gardner (Brown) on Saturday.
In singles IV, Asch opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win to advance to the quarterfinals where he defeated Penn's Phillip Law in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-2). He will play Erik Kreutzer of Boston College in the semis on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Red has three singles players competing in singles VI. Gauthier first defeated Army's Jordan Gridley, 6-4, 6-2, before playing past St. Joseph's Jordan Talbot, 6-2, 6-1. He will face Columbia's John Chan in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Connor Sherwood found success in his opening match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Boston College's Adam Davison and then defeated Yale's Tom Santoro, 6-2, 6-0. He will face Princeton's Parker Preyer in the semis. Mirza Klis dropped his opener to Boston College's Brian Locklear, 6-3, 6-2, but followed with a victory over Harvard's Linus Hietaniemi, 6-0, 6-3. He will face Matt Himmelsbach on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles play, Doppelt and Goldstein lost a close 8-6 match to Brown's Gardner and Garland in flight I. They will play Jung and Lewis on Saturday. In doubles II, Asch and Klis dropped an 8-4 match to Penn's Schwartz and Vasin on Friday morning. They will now play Dartmouth's Gayer and Laswer on Saturday morning.
In doubles III, Gauthier and Feldman teamed up to defeat Columbia's Deb-sen and Sezgen, 8-6. They advance to the quarterfinals where they will meet Marist's Sessagesimi and Hemmelabois. Fife and Jaklitsch won their opening doubles match, 8-3, over Marist's Pisekcy and Von Nordheim. They will next face St. Joseph's Honig and Talbot.
