ITHACA, N.Y. -- Yale got goals from four different players to end the Big Red's 10-game unbeaten streak as the Bulldogs topped Cornell 4-3 on Friday evening at Lynah Rink. The win improved the visitors to 12-5-1 overall (7-3-1 ECAC Hockey), while Cornell dropped only its second contest of the year to fall to 13-2-3 (8-1-2 ECAC Hockey).
Yale's four goals matched Cornell's previous five opponents' total combined as the Bulldogs out-shot the Big Red 36-20 on the night. The visitors never trailed in handing Cornell its first home loss of the 2008-09 campaign after opening with a mark of 6-0-1 and snapped Cornell's 10-game unbeaten streak, the longest such streak in four years.
Riley Nash had a goal and an assist to lead the Big Red offense, his third straight contest with a score, while
Brendon Nash and
Jared Seminoff also lit the lamp in the losing effort.
Ben Scrivens, who entered the game leading the nation in both goals against average and save percentage, stopped 32 shots. Cornell finished the night 1-for-8 on the power play, while Yale closed out 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Brendan Mason led Yale with a goal and two assists, while Mark Arcobello's score midway through the third period gave the visitors an insurmountable 4-2 lead. A Big Red extra-man score with 20 seconds remaining by
Brendon Nash made things interesting, but the home team could not get off a shot before the final horn.
Despite the loss, Cornell maintains its first-place standing in the league as second-place Princeton was idle.
Yale got on the board with a Jeff Anderson goal in with 16:52 gone in the first period as he followed up a rebound off a Matt Nelson shot with one second left on a penalty to
Brendon Nash, though Cornell would tie things up just a minute and a half into the second period on Seminoff's rocket shot from the right point. Yale responded just under three minutes later with Tom Dignard's third goal of the season as the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead.
Once again, the Big Red evened things up with
Riley Nash's eighth goal of the season, a power-play strike that came on a scrum in front of the Yale goal.
Evan Barlow and
Colin Greening both tallied assists on the play, the second of the night for both players. Again, Yale responded quickly, taking just two and a half minutes for Brendon Mason's first goal of the season. With the two teams skating four-on-four, Mason picked up a loose puck at his own blue line and broke in alone on Scrivens, skating in and flipping the puck over the outstretched goaltender.
Midway through the third period, Yale added to the lead as Mark Arcobello followed up a rebound off a Brian O'Neill shot to stake the Bulldogs to a two-goal lead. Cornell pulled Scrivens with 3:02 to play for the extra skater, withstanding several close calls as Yale tried for a long-distance empty-net goal. Cornell closed the margin with 20.1 seconds left with
Brendon Nash's strike from the center point, but could not find the tying goal in the closing seconds.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday night, playing host to Brown in a 7 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink.
