NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Big Red women's hockey team fell to Yale, 3-1, on Friday night on the road. All three of the Bulldogs' goals were notched by the Yale special teams. Cornell's lone goal was scored by freshman Catherine White and assisted by sophomore Rebecca Johnston. Junior Jenny Niesluchowski made 25 saves in net for the Big Red. Cornell moves to 9-9-2 overall and 5-6-2 in ECAC Hockey play. The Bulldogs improved to 8-11 and 4-8 in league action.
With only 55 seconds off the clock, Yale picked up a penalty for interference. With a little under 30 seconds left in the Big Red power play, Heather Grant looked to clear the puck into the Cornell zone to allow her team to change lines. Grant caught Niesluchowski by surprise and the puck went through the Big Red goaltender's legs to put Yale up 1-0 on the short-handed goal.
The Big Red and Yale were four-on-four at 6:26 of the second period after Cornell took a hooking penalty at 5:35 and the Bulldogs were hit with a checking infraction. White tied up the score at 1-1 at 7:04 of the second period on her 11th goal of the season. Johnston picked up her 26th point of the year on the assist.
Cornell was hit by an interference penalty at 10:17 of the third period. Junior Liz Zorn grabbed the puck of the initial faceoff in the Big Red defensive zone and skated the length of the ice. Zorn tried to net the go-ahead goal but Bulldog goaltender Genny Ladiges ruined her short-handed opportunity making the save.
Yale had its own scoring opportunity on the same power play at 11:49. Danielle Kozlowski's shot was deflected into the air and rolled into the Big Red net to put Yale up, 2-0.
With 2:20 left to go in the game, Cornell pulled Niesluchowski in favor of an extra attacker. Bray Ketchum netted an empty-net goal at 18:28 to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
Cornell was 0-5 on the power play, while Yale was 1-2.
The Big Red will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when the team will play at Brown for a 4 p.m. game.
