CANTON, N.Y. -- Friday night was one of those games the Cornell men's hockey team would like to forget, but will likely end up remembering for a very long time. The Big Red allowed a season-high eight goals in an 8-1 defeat at the hands of St. Lawrence on Friday night at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. The loss sends the Big Red to 14-3-3 on the year and 9-2-2 in ECAC Hockey action, while St. Lawrence improves to 13-10-2 overall and 5-6-2 in league play.

Riley Nash scored the lone goal of the game for the Big Red, with Colin Greening collecting an assist. Cornell goaltender Ben Scrivens lasted just halfway through the game, stopping 19 of the 23 shots he faced before being lifted as St. Lawrence jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Freshman Michael Garman came on in relief and stopped 12 of the 15 shots he faced. Alex Petizian made 34 saves in picking up the win.

Cornell closed out the night 0-for-6 on the power play, while St. Lawrence struck for three power play goals in 11 chances. The two teams combined for 67 minutes worth of penalties on the night, with 39 of those coming in the third period alone as frustrations boiled over.

St. Lawrence took the early lead just 1:12 into the game as a turnover at the Cornell blue line found the puck on the stick of St. Lawrence's Brandon Bollig, who ripped a shot from the faceoff dot to Scrivens' right that beat the junior netminder high above his blocker.

With 1:33 to play in the first period, the Saints went ahead 2-0 on a floater of a shot by Jared Ross from the point that somehow found its way through traffic to beat Scrivens on the glove side.

St. Lawrence went ahead 3-0 with 17:43 to play in the second period, capitalizing on the power play that resulted after an interference call on Justin Krueger. The Saints' DeVergilio redirected a shot at the post up and over the shoulder of Scrivens with Casey Parenteau and Jeff Caister both collecting an assist.

With Cornell on the penalty kill following a contact to the head-elbowing call on Riley Nash, Patrick Kennedy was whistled for a cross check with a second left on the penalty to Nash. Cornell escaped the one second 5-on-3, but just seven seconds into the penalty on Kennedy, the Saints went ahead 4-0 when Zack Miskovic took a pass from behind the goal and ripped a shot from between the circles that beat Scrivens high to the blocker side. Cornell coach Mike Schafer then opted to try to change his team's luck, swapping Scrivens for freshman goaltender Mike Garman with 10:39 to play in the second period. Garman would stop all six shots he faced in the second period, as Cornell went back to the locker room down by four goals.

Cornell finally got on the board with 27 seconds elapsed in the third period, a play created by Colin Greening winning the puck in the corner and feeding the puck to Riley Nash, who skated in alone along the goal line and stuffed the puck home over the outstretched leg of Petizian.

Cornell narrowly missed cutting into the lead again with 16 minutes to go in the third as Michael Kennedy gained the zone and skated in on a 2-on-1 with brother Patrick Kennedy. Michael made the pass across to Patrick, who immediately slipped the puck back to Michael with Petizian caught on the right post, but Michael could not get his stick on the puck in time to redirect it into the gaping net, instead sending it wide of the cage.

Just over a minute later, the Saints went back up by four, this time with Bollig hitting Travis Vermuelen, camped out in front of the crease for a quick one-timer over the glove hand of Garman.

With 12:54 to play, Cornell coach Mike Schafer pulled Garman for the extra skater, though referee Harry Dumas did not recognize it, blowing the play play dead as Cornell was on a rush through center ice. The play backfired, though, as after the restart, St. Lawrence's Derek Keller ripped a shot from the Saints' own blue line that sailed into the Cornell goal for a 6-1 lead and putting Garman back onto the ice.

Jared Ross scored a power play goal with 10:41 to play in the game, while Jake Klancher added the eighth St. Lawrence goal with 6:39 to go in the game.

Cornell will try to rebound on Saturday night when the Big Red takes on Clarkson in a 7 p.m. game at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.
