CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The third-ranked Virginia field hockey scored three first half goals and held on to defeat Cornell, 3-0, this afternoon on University Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va. The Big Red received a strong performance from both its goalies, as Mel Jue made nine saves in the first 35 minutes of action, before Alex Botte came on in relief and stopped six shots.

One of the top offensive teams in the nation, the Cavaliers outshot Cornell, 24-4, and held the significant 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. Paige Selenski, who ranks eighth in the nation in goals per game, helped her cause with a pair of goals, the first coming 9:58 into the contest and the second coming with four seconds to play in the first half. UVA's Kaitlyn Hiltz scored the second goal of the day at the 28:55 mark, with the assist credited to Traci Ragukas.

Cornell's Kelley Kantarian provided the Big Red's only two offensive threats, putting both of her shots on goal and forcing Adrienne Ostroff and Kim Kastuk to make one save each.

The Big Red (8-2) is back in action next weekend as it welcomes Harvard to Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m.
