ITHACA, N.Y.—
The No. 4 nationally ranked Big Red wrestling team was narrowly defeated, 18-17, by No. 10 Maryland on Friday night in a heart breaking match that came down to the heavyweight bout. Junior Mack Lewnes won by tech fall over fourth ranked Mike Letts at 174 pounds, and Cornell picked up victories by Frank Perrelli (125), Kyle Dake (141), Corey Manson (149) and Steve Bosak (184).

No. 2 Lewnes brought the sell-out crowd of 1,000 to its feet with his 18-3 tech fall victory in the last seconds over No. 4 Letts. Eighth ranked Big Red freshman Kyle Dake picked up his first win in a Cornell singlet with an 8-3 decision over No. 4 Alex Krom at 141 pounds. Cornell held a 17-9 lead through 184 pounds, but the Terrapins rallied, and with a pin at 197 and an overtime heavyweight victory, Maryland came away with the win. 





The match began at 125 pounds where Frank Perrelli took on Maryland's James Knox. Perrelli came out strong and dominated action in the first period. Knox was hit with a stall warning midway through the period before Perrelli took a 2-0 lead with a takedown. Knox escaped and continued to try and evade the Big Red wrestler, and Perrelli was awarded a point for his stalling. Perrelli grabbed another point with an escape in the second and made lots of shots at his opponent, but Knox continued to evade him. Knox earned a point with an escape of his own in the third period, but Perrelli went on to win a 4-2 decision putting Cornell up 3-0.

At 133 pounds, No. 6 Mike Grey took on No. 8 Steven Bell. Midway through the first, Bell caught hold of Grey and took a 2-0 lead. Grey escaped, and with another escape to start the second tied up the bout going into the third. Bell chose down to begin the third period. The Terrapin wrestler reversed Grey to go up 4-2. Grey escaped to come within a point, but he could not catch Bell and lost a 4-3 decision.

No. 4 Krom took an early lead over No. 8 Dake at 141 pounds with a takedown. Dake grabbed his first point for Cornell with an escape. Krom quickly escaped from his opening down position in the second to extend his lead with the only point of the period. Dake chose to start the third down and was awarded a point when Krom was hit with his second stalling call. Dake escaped to tie the bought. With 49 seconds left on the clock, the Big Red wrestlers caught hold of Krom and threw him to the mat bringing the crowd to its feet. Dake took the lead with the takedown and was looking for the pin. Krom turned back, but Dake came away with three back points to earn an 8-3 decision.

Junior Corey Manson faced Jon Kohler at 149 pounds. The two battled throughout the first trading points back and forth. With four takedowns, Manson took a 9-6 lead into the second. Manson chose down in the second and with 25 seconds left on the clock reversed his opponent. Kohler earned the only point of the third with an escape. Manson won an 11-6 decision to put Cornell up 9-3.

The first period was scoreless in the 157 pound bout of the Big Red's DJ Meagher vs. Kyle John. John rode Meagher for the entire second period to rack up two minutes of riding time. John chose down to start the third and took a 2-0 lead with a reversal. John was awarded another point after Meagher was hit with a technical violation for locking hands. Meagher escaped with a little under 30 seconds left on the clock, but with 2:46 in riding time, John won a 4-1 decision.

Maryland's John Asper took an early lead with a takedown over John Basting at 165 pounds. Basting quickly escaped and grabbed the lead by throwing Asper down onto the mat. Midway through the period, Asper escaped to tie the bout and took back the lead with an escape in the second. Basting once again tied the match with an escape in the third, but Asper earned two more takedowns to win an 8-6 decision. Cornell and Maryland were tied, 9-9.

At 174 pounds, Lewnes was in control of his match over No. 4 Letts from the moment the whistle blew. Midway through the first, he took the lead with a takedown and quickly looked to turn his opponent. Lewnes nearly had Letts flat, but the Terrapin fought back to his stomach. With three back points, Lewnes had a 5-0 lead going into the second. Letts escaped from his opening down position in the second, but Lewnes caught him once again and rode out the rest of the period. Lewnes immediately escaped from his opening down position in the third, and after another takedown turned Letts towards his back once again. Once Letts made his way back to the mat, Lewnes let him up looking to score more points. The Big Red wrestler earned two more takedowns in the last 40 seconds of the match to earn an 18-3 tech fall. With the five points, Cornell took a 14-9 lead.

In his first collegiate dual, Cornell's 20th-ranked Steve Bosak faced Corey Peltier at 184 pounds. Bosak took a 2-0 lead in the first with a takedown for the only points of the first. In the second, Peltier chose to start the second down, but he could not escape Bosak. Bosak escaped from his starting down position in the third, and with riding time won a 4-0 decision.

At 197 pounds, No. 5 Cam Simaz took on No. 3 Hudson Taylor. The two were scoreless for most of the first period. With 35 seconds left on the clock, Taylor caught Simaz and went up 4-0 with two back points as time ran out. Taylor chose to start the second period down and held a 5-0 lead with an escape. Simaz countered by taking him down for his first points of the match. Taylor evaded the Big Red wrestler's grasp for an escape. With 40 seconds left in the period, Taylor took Simaz to the mat and quickly turned him to his back. Taylor earned six points for his team with a pin in 4:45.

Cornell held a narrow 18-16 lead heading into the heavyweight bought where No. 12 Josh Arnone faced Patrick Gilmore. Arnone grabbed an early lead with a takedown and followed with two back points. Gilmore notched his only point of the period with an escape. Arnone chose down to start the second, but could not escape. Gilmore quickly escaped in the third, and with three seconds left in the bout, earned a takedown to send the match into sudden victory. Gilmore quickly attacked from the start and with 10 seconds off the clock earned a takedown to win the bout, 6-4, and secure the team victory for Maryland.

The Big Red will be back in action on Saturday when it will host the Body Bar Invitational in Newman Arena. Matches will begin at 9 a.m.
