Women’s Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to Princeton

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's volleyball team fell to Princeton this evening, 3-0, at Newman Arena. The Big Red is back in action tomorrow, as it takes on Penn on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. Before the game, Cornell will celebrate Senior Day, honoring Jessica Misse, Megan Mushovic and Juliana Rogers.

Cornell (6-16, 3-8 Ivy) was led by Alessa Cekauskas, who was perfect on the evening with nine kills and no errors on 26 attempts for a .346 hitting percentage. Deveney Pula and Jessica Misse chipped in seven kills apiece. Setters Jordan Reeder and Lucy Zheng both saw time in the match with Reeder registering 22 assists while Zheng added 12. Senior libero Megan Mushovic registered 21 digs on the evening and needs just 17 more to reach 2,000 for her career.

Princeton (8-13, 6-4 Ivy) had a pair of players register double-digit kills with Sheena Donohue leading the way with 18, while Polly Korbel tallied 11. Michaela Venuti handed out 36 assists and Hillary Ford had a team-high 13 digs.

In the first set, the teams fought back-and-forth to a 12-12 tie before a pair of kills by Pula and a service ace from Mushovic put the home team up. 15-12. The Tigers responded immediately with three unanswered points to knot the game again at 15-15. After another tie at 16-16, Princeton used a 5-1 scoring run to take a 21-17 lead. The Tigers outscored Cornell the rest of the way, 4-3, to take the 25-20 victory.

Princeton jumped out to an early 9-4 lead before pushing its advantage to 18-9. The Big Red couldn't recover from the insurmountable lead and fell, 25-18.

Cornell responded early in the third set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead, thanks to kills by Rogers, Cekauskas, Pula and Hansen, as well as a service ace from Cekauskas. The Tigers fought back with an 8-3 run as it took its first lead of the game, 11-10. The Big Red tied the game at 11-11 on a kill by Cekauskas, the first of three ties on the way to 14-14. From there, Princeton used a 7-1 run to take a commanding 22-15 lead before rolling to the 25-17 final.
