TROY, N.Y.—The Big Red women's hockey team lost to Rensselaer, 3-1, on Friday night. RPI edged out Cornell with two goals in the final period to push the Big Red to 11-12-5 overall and 7-9-5 in ECAC Hockey.

The Engineers opened scoring early in the first period with rookie Jill Vandegrift scoring at 1:45. Vandegrift grabbed a rebounded shot from Sydney O'Keefe and pushed the puck past junior goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski to go up, 1-0.

The Big Red quickly tied the game at 1-1 at 3:46 of the first. Freshman Catherine White took advantage of a Cornell power play and sent the puck past netminder Sonja van der Bliek off a pass from classmate Amanda Young.

The two teams remained deadlocked after two periods of play.

RPI took the lead once again at 4:53 of the third period when Whitney Naslund shot the puck to the right of Niesluchowski.

The Big Red pulled Niesluchowski twice at the end of the game in favor of an extra attacker. RPI's Alisa Harrison took advantage of the empty net and scored her team's third goal.

The Engineers had a 35-27 shot advantage over the Big Red, and Niesluchowski made 32 saves.

The Big Red will wrap up its regular season on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Union for a 4 p.m. contest.
