After defeating Wofford, Cornell squared off against a formidable Furman tennis squad, currently ranked 72 in the nation. The match started off with Cornell dropping the doubles point, but not before a valiant effort by
Marc Asch and
Mirza Klis provided some highlights. Down 7-2, they pair battled back, and won the third doubles match in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4).
Playing against #123 ranked Philipp Fuelkell,
Andy Gauthier came out strong, taking the first set 6-1 at fourth singles. However, he was unable to keep the momentum, and lost the second two sets 6-2, 6-4. At first singles, Jon Jaklitsch was pitted against the very tough Andy Juc, and match full of long rallies, fell 6-3, 6-4.
Finding themselves down 3-0, the Big Red found themselves with their backs against the wall, and was able to respond. At second singles, Josh Goldstein got the squad on the board with a very impressive three set win over #106 Bo Ladyman. After falling behind 6-1 in the first set, Goldstein battled back to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.
Marc Asch also responded in a big way, battling back from what seemed like an impossible hole. Finding himself down 5-3 in the first, and staring at triple set point, Asch turned the match completely around, staving off all the break points and winning the next ten straight games to cap an incredible 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Boosted by his teammates performances, Jon Fife, as has been his prerogative all season, also grinded out a very tough three set victory. Fife took the first set 6-3 but dropped the second in a very tight tiebreaker. Not to be denied, Fife fought his way to a third set tiebreaker, which he won 7-3, to pull the Big Red even.
At sixth singles,
Kyle Doppelt would only be broken once, but that was enough, as Jordan Walters was able to use that break to win the first set 6-4, and then take the second in a tiebreaker.
