SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Cornell offense banged out 10 hits, but four errors would be the Big Red's undoing, falling to Sacramento State, 6-2, on Thursday afternoon in Sacramento, Calif. The loss drops the Big Red to 2-7 on the year, while Sacramento State improves to 8-8.
Scott Hardinger and
Jadd Schmeltzer both had a pair of hits to lead the Big Red on the day, with Schmeltzer hitting his first home run of the season. Schmeltzer also took the loss on the mound, working five innings and allowing three runs, though only one of those was earned, while striking out eight.
Hardinger got the Big Red offense going in the first inning, hitting a one-out double and scoring on
Mickey Brodsky's single to right. The lead was short-lived, however, as Sacramento State scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Big Red tied the score in the top of the sixth on Schmeltzer's solo home run with one out, but Sacramento State again went ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Hornets then added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to provide the final margin.
Game two of the four-game set against Sacramento State will be on Friday at 2 p.m. Pacific time.
