The Cornell men's soccer team closes out a three-game road trip to open the 2009 season on Friday night, playing at Canisius, before holding the home opener on Sunday against St. Bonaventure at Berman Field. Friday's contest will begin at 7 p.m., with Sunday's starting at 4 p.m. following the women's match against Manhattan.

HEAD COACH JARO ZAWISLAN
Jaro Zawislan is in his first season directing the Cornell men's soccer program, becoming the 11th head coach in Cornell history. Zawislan, who spent the last seven seasons as an assistant coach at Syracuse, made his collegiate head coaching debut against the Orange, a 2-1 Cornell loss, but picked up his first career win two days later at Hartwick. His coaching career also includes stops at Stanford and Creighton following a decorated playing career at Clemson. A 1993 graduate of Clemson, Zawislan played professionally in both the United States and his native Poland before turning to coaching. He is assisted by Joe Schneck, in his fourth season with the Big Red.

ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell comes into the weekend with a 1-1 mark on the year after splitting its two matches last weekend to open the season. Cornell began on Saturday with a 2-1 loss at Syracuse before rebounding with a 1-0 win at Hartwick on Monday night. Junior Brett Sumpio scored the long goal against the Orange, while sophomore Kyle Parsons got the game-winning tally against Hartwick. Junior Scott Caldwell leads the team with a pair of assists after helping on both Big Red scores. Junior Scott Brody has played every minute in goal for the Big Red, posting a 1.00 goals-against average and a .846 save percentage, stopping 11 of the 13 shots he has faced on the season. Brody also picked up his second career shutout with the win over Hartwick, with his first coming two seasons ago, and also against Hartwick.

ABOUT CANISIUS
Canisius is 0-3 on the season after losing a pair of contests last weekend at Cincinnati and Loyola (Ill.). The Griffins opened the year with a 1-0 loss to Drexel at home on Sept. 1, and have yet to find the back of the net this season, being out-scored 10-0. Canisius has been out-shot, 68-29, while allowing 21 corner kicks and taking just five. Adam Miller and Luke Seymour have split time in goal evenly, with both goalkeepers posting a 3.33 goals-against average. Seymour has a .653 save percentage, while Miller has stopped 58.3 percent of the shots he has faced on the year.

THE SERIES WITH SYRACUSE
Friday night's match will be the first all-time between Cornell and Canisius.

ABOUT ST. BONAVENTURE
The Bonnies enter the weekend with a 1-2 record and will play at Siena on Friday before taking on the Big Red on Sunday. St. Bonaventure opened the year with losses to Cleveland State and Wright State before picking up its first victory of the year with a 2-0 win over Houghton on Tuesday. Four different players have scored a goal this season for the Bonnies, with Brett Allen adding an assist for a team-leading three points. In goal, David Flynn has played every minute, posting a 2.00 goals-against average and a .700 save percentage with one shutout.

THE SERIES WITH ST. BONAVENTURE
Cornell leads the all-time series with St. Bonaventure, 3-2, though the Bonnies won the last meeting between the two schools on Sept. 25, 2001 in Olean, N.Y.

A CHANGE WILL DO YOU GOOD
After the first weekend of the 2009 season, the results for the Big Red would indicate that the appointment of Jaro Zawislan as head coach was an excellent move. After scoring just eight goals during the 2008 season that saw the Big Red go 1-15 under Bryan Scales, Cornell has already evened its win tally and has scored a pair of goals, a quarter of the way to evening its mark from all of last season. More impressively is the fact that three newcomers have started both games, and that eight newcomers have appeared for the Big Red this season.

LOVING HARTWICK
Junior goalkeeper Scott Brody likely couldn't be blamed if he wanted to play Hartwick every week. In two career games against the Hawks, Brody has a pair of shutouts against Hartwick, the only two shutouts of his career. The first came in his first career start as a freshman in 2007, with the second coming on Monday in Oneonta.

NO PK? NO PROBLEM
When senior Matt Bouraee pushed his penalty kick wide left against Hartwick early in the second half with the score tied at zero, it didn't spell disaster for the Big Red. Despite missing the penalty, Cornell turned up the intensity on offense, and that paid off with Kyle Parsons' game-winner with just under eight minutes to play.

HELPING HANDS
Cornell players have tacked on two assists to both of the Big Red's goals this season, with Scott Caldwell and Ben Kenyon helping on Brett Sumpio's goal against Syracuse and Caldwell and Shane Merriman assisting on Kyle Parsons' goal against Hartwick. In contrast, of the two goals scored by the Big Red's opponents this season, only one assist has been recorded.

FOR STARTERS
Cornell is 33-23-8 in season openers dating back to the 1946 season. The 2009 season marked the third time that Cornell opened a season against Syracuse, with Cornell now holding a 2-1 lead against the Orange in season openers.

FOREIGN INFLUENCE
Five different countries are represented on the 2009 Cornell men's soccer roster, with the United States (24), Canada (2), Brazil (1), Bulgaria (1) and China (1) claiming team members.

NATIONAL APPEAL
Among the 24 players on the Cornell roster from the United States, the Big Red has drawn heavily from New York and New Jersey to fill out the roster. The Garden State leads all states with seven players calling New Jersey home, while six players reside in New York. Illinois, Ohio and Massachusetts each have two players, while Arizona, California, Connecticut, Indiana and Michigan have a single player on the Cornell roster.

UP NEXT
Following Sunday's match against St. Bonaventure, the Big Red will head to New Jersey for a pair of games at the Princeton Invitational. Cornell opens the tournament against Monmouth at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, before taking on Fairleigh Dickinson two days later at noon. Cornell returns to Berman Field on Sept. 23 against Binghamton in a 7 p.m. contest.
