Volleyball Defeats Hartford, 3-2

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In its second match of the day, the Cornell volleyball team defeated Hartford, 3-2, this evening at Columbia's Levien Gym. The Big Red won the second, fourth and fifth set – set scores were 17-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-13, 15-11.

Deveney Pula registered 17 kills and just five errors on 40 attempts for a .300 hit percentage to go along with 11 digs. Juliana Rogers added 11 kills, while Jessica Misse chipped in eight kills and four block assists. Sophomore Sydney Campbell and freshman Lucy Zheng ran the offense with 19 and 16 assists, respectively, while Megan Mushovic anchored the defense with 22 digs.

Hartford (6-8) was led by Erin Marco's 22 kills and Lindsay Ford's 44 assists.

Cornell (3-8) got off to a slow start in the first set, allowing the Hawks to build a 12-6 lead. The Big Red was unable to close the gap and Hartford cruised to the 25-17 victory.

In the second set, Cornell fought back from an early deficit to knot the game at 8-8 on a kill by Rogers. Hartford pulled back ahead, 11-9, but couldn't hold on as the Big Red tied the score again at 11-11. Neither team would take more than a one-point lead the rest of the way, as they combined for 11 ties before a pair of Hartford attack errors gave Cornell the 26-24 victory.

Harford used a small run early in the third set to build a 10-7 lead and then managed to hold the Big Red at arm's-length all the way to the 25-22 victory.

Cornell dominated the fourth set, jumping out to an early 7-3 lead behind the strength of two kills by Alice Cope and one kill each from Campbell, Pula, Rogers and Misse. Hartford fought back to knot the set at 9-9, but three straight Hawk errors gave Cornell the 12-9 lead. After Hartford pulled back to within one-point, 12-11, the Big Red scored eight unanswered points to build a 20-11 lead. The run was highlighted by a pair of kills from both Pula and Misse, to go along with a kill from Campbell. From there, the Big Red cruised to the 25-13 victory.

The teams battled to an 8-8 tie in the deciding fifth set, but a kill by Misse sparked a 5-1 scoring run for Cornell as it cruised to the 15-11 victory.

The Big Red is back in action next weekend as it plays host to Columbia at on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Newman Arena at 2 p.m.
