ITHACA, N.Y. -- Battling through a cold, rainy fall day, the Cornell men's soccer team used a pair of first-half goals to knock off Long Island, 2-1, in a nonconference contest on Sunday afternoon at Berman Field. The win keeps the Big Red above .500 for the year at 4-3-1, while Long Island falls to 3-4 on the year.
Cornell got on the scoreboard first, with
Brett Sumpio scoring his second goal of the season, finishing off an outstanding effort from
Matt Bouraee. Bouraee received a throw-in from near the midfield line and took the ball toward the corner. Bouraee then beat his man along the goal line and placed a pass to Sumpio, camped out 10 yards out from goal. The junior then calmly slotted his shot into the corner of the net to stake the Big Red to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
Seven minutes later, it was the reverse of the play, as Sumpio played a ball through the Long Island back line from midfield that Bouraee ran on to. The senior dribbled around the goalkeeper and slipped a left-footed shot into the open net to give the Big Red a 2-0 lead.
The Blackbirds would cut the margin in half in the 26th minute, as Craig Stant's corner kick to the near post was headed in by Steve Jakubowski, but that would be the only scoring of the match as the two teams combined for seven shots in the second half, but could not add to the score line.
Cornell goalkeeper
Scott Brody picked up three saves in taking the victory, while Long Island netminder Adam Janssen stopped three shots in picking up the loss. Both teams collected 11 shots in the match, with Long Island taking nine corner kicks to Cornell's seven.
The Big Red returns to action on Saturday, opening up the Ivy League slate with a 7:30 p.m. match at Penn in Philadelphia.
