Wrestling in First Place After Day One of the NYS Collegiate Wrestling Championships

ITHACA, N.Y.—
The Big Red wrestling team sits in first place at the New York State Collegiate Championships after day one. Cornell has nine wrestlers that moved on to the semifinals in their respective weight classes in the “A” Bracket. The Big Red notched bonus points in 15 out of 22 varsity bouts, including 10 wins by fall. Cornell will complete the tournament on Sunday with a 10 a.m. start in Newman Arena.

At 125 pounds, Frank Perrelli pinned RIT's Shin Wakabayaski in 46 seconds and won a 22-6 tech fall over Columbia's Robert Dyer.

Top seeded Mike Grey pinned Morrisville's Akinniran Akinfemi in 49 seconds and won by a 25-10 tech fall against Nassau's Francisco Pereira.

Freshman Cody Kelly wrestled for Cornell at 141 pounds. Kelly lost a 5-3 decision to fourth-seeded Mark Arcara of Cortland in his first bout. He followed by pinning Jon Bernard of Jamestown in 6:59. Kelly defeated Oneonta's Mike Greg by a 4-3 decision, but lost to Buffalo's Andrew Schutt.

At 149 pounds, Corey Manson won by tech fall (21-4, 7:00) over Kris Wright of Jamestown. He advanced to the semifinals with a 12-3 major decision over Niagara's Shay Shive.

John Basting won an 18-14 decision over Shawn Honrahan (Alfred State) in his first match of the day at 157 pounds. He advances to the semis with a 4-1 decision over Will Horwath of Ithaca.

Justin Kerber pinned both of his opponents at 165 pounds. Kerber won by fall in 4:51 over Mike Maher (Brockport) before pinning Paul Ciaramell (Niagara) in 2:52.

Colin McDonald picked up bonus points for the Big Red in both of his bouts at 174. McDonald opened with a pin against Don Schidhauer (Niagara) in 1:22, before winning by tech fall against Tony Lisek (17-1, 4:00).

At 184 pounds, Nate Holley pinned Wheeler Brunschmid (Morrisville) in 2:42, before winning by fall over Eric Mazgaj (Jamestown) in 1:24. Holley will face Buffalo's Josh Peters in the semifinals tomorrow.

Sophomore Cam Simaz was the No. 1 seed at 197 pounds. Simaz pinned Brian Kramer (Oneonta) in 2:21 before winning by fall over Jamie Myers (NYU) in 2:40. Simaz will face Cortland's Carl Korpi in the semifinals.

At heavyweight, Taylor Moore opened his day with a 3-2 decision over Jason Weber of Buffalo. He advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3 decision over Brockport's Pat Krenz.

In the B (JV) division, Cornell had 10 wrestlers place in the top four of their respective weight classes. Cody Hutcheson (165), Michael Moore (184), Matt Panasevich (197) and George Kocher (HWT) each won their championship bout.
