ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 contest to Penn on Friday night at Berman Field in Ithaca, falling to 4-5 on the year and 0-2 in Ivy League play in the process. Penn improved to 5-4 on the year and 2-0 in league action.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Bartlett stopped seven shots in the loss, including five in the second half as she tried to keep the Big Red within striking distance of the Quakers. For Penn, Caroline Williams made four stops as she earned the shutout. Sarah Friedman had a goal and an assist for the Quakers, while Kerry Scalora and Theresa Yankovich both tallied a goal in the victory.

Penn took the early lead when Scalora took advantage of a loose ball in the penalty area. Following a Penn corner kick, the Cornell defense cleared the ball out of immediate danger, but directly onto the foot of Scalora. The Penn forward took a touch and lined a low shot through traffic that had Bartlett screened until the last second, slipping in the goal in the eighth minute.

The Quakers' second goal came much in the same fashion in the 22nd minute as Friedman collected a loose ball in the Cornell penalty box and slipped a shot inside the far post to give Penn a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Penn would make the score 3-0 early in the second half when Friedman lofted a cross into the penalty area that a Quaker forward and Cornell defender both went up for and missed. The ball came down onto the oncoming Yankovich, who calmly slipped a shot past Bartlett for the third Penn goal of the night.

Despite Cornell putting intense pressure on the ball in the second half, the Big Red could not solve Williams as she made a pair of stops in the second half to seal the win for the Quakers.

Cornell returns to action on Sunday when it travels to in-state rival Colgate for a 1 p.m. contest at Van Doren Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
