ITHACA, N.Y. -- A five-goal first period behind two goals apiece from seniors
Joe Devin and
Tyler Roeszler would be more than enough offense as the Cornell men's hockey team scored a 6-3 exhibition victory over the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres on Thursday night at Lynah Rink.
Roeszler had a three-point night on the evening, with all three of his points coming in that five-goal first period. Freshman
Armand de Swardt picked up a goal and an assist, while
Braden Birch and
Greg Miller both chipped in a pair of assists on the night. Junior Mike Garman got the start in goal, picking up 23 saves for the victory for the Big Red.
For UQTR, Francis Guerette Charland had a goal and two assists, while Etienne Bellavance-Martin and Alexandre Demers both chipped in a goal. Maxime Frechette, Jean Sebastian Breton and Pierre-Luc Lessard each added an assist. Jean-Christophe Blanchard had 38 saves in the losing effort for the Patriotes.
Roeszler opened the scoring for the Big Red in the game's opening minute, following up a rebound off a shot from freshman
Dustin Mowrey. The one-goal lead stood until 5:01 remained in the period when the Big Red offense erupted for five goals in the final five minutes of the period. First, it was Devin scoring off assists from Roeszler and Miller ont he power play, and Roeszler scoring an even-strength goal from
John Esposito and
Braden Birch.
Joe Devin scored a short-handed goal with just over 1:30 to play in the period, and
Nick D'Agostino was released from the penalty box behind the play, picking up an outlet pass from de Swardt and ripping a wrist shot past Blanchard to make the score 5-0 in favor of Cornell after on period.
In the second, the Patriotes got one goal back as Bellavance-Martin scored nearly midway through the period, UQTR tacked on another pair 1:21 apart in the third period to cut the Cornell lead to 5-3. It would be de Swardt who put the final touches on the contest, scoring with 9:02 to play in the game after picking up a pass from Birch.
Cornell finished the night 1-for-5 on power play, while UQTR went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
