PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Big Red field hockey team won its third straight overtime game and extended its winning streak over Brown to a series-high five games as it defeated the Bears, 2-1, this afternoon on Warner Roof in Providence, R.I. Cornell scored just 4:33 into the overtime period when
Hannah Balleza tipped a penalty corner shot by
Mattie Prodanovic into the net. With the win, Cornell improves to 10-3 overall and remains in second place in the Ivy League with a record of 4-1.
It was Prodanovic that also registered the game-tying goal late in the second half to bring the Big Red back from an early 1-0 deficit.
After an incredibly slow start in which it took just four shots and put only one on goal, Cornell bounced back to hold the significant 18-5 advantage in shots and the 12-1 edge in shots on goal on the game. The Big Red also took 15 penalty corners to Brown's five.
Brown (3-11, 1-4) got an early lead and then held on thanks to the play of goalie Lauren Kessler, who needed to make seven saves in the second half and finished with eight saves on the day. Back-up goalie Alexi Aurigemma and midfielder Katie Hyland also registered one save apiece for the Bears.
After a back-and-forth battle in the midfield to start the game, Brown got on the board with the first shot taken by either team when Hyland scored off a penalty corner at the 10:38 mark. Assists were credited to Laura Iacovetti and Leslie Springmeyer. That would be all the offensive action that there was in the first half and the home team went into the break leading, 1-0.
Cornell turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, forcing Kessler to make two saves in the first five minutes. It would be nearly 15 minutes before the Big Red would get another flurry of shots on goal, as a shot by
Genevieve Collins was swept off the goal line by Hyland, but it wasn't cleared and
Paige Mollineaux put a shot on goal that was saved by Kessler. As the Bears attempted to clear, a foul was called and Cornell earned a penalty corner, which set up the equalizer.
Mallory Bannon inserted the ball and it was pushed off to
Catie De Stio, who sent it to Prodanovic at the top left of the circle and Prodanovic slipped the ball near post to make it a 1-1 game in the 53rd minute.
Having found its offensive rhythm, Cornell forced Kessler to make three more saves over the next 10 minutes of action, but couldn't find the go-ahead goal.
With time winding down, Prodanovic managed another shot on goal, which was saved, but moments later Kessler was given a yellow card and was replaced by Aurigemma. The Big Red was also awarded a penalty corner, but couldn't convert and the game was sent into overtime.
Aurigemma played the first few minutes of overtime, registering a save, before Kessler returned at the 73:35 mark. Moments later, the Big Red scored the game-winner.
The Big Red returns to Ithaca next weekend as it welcomes No. 5 Princeton to Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, Oct. 30 at noon.
