ITHACA, N.Y. --
Maneesha Chitanvis' first-half goal gave the Cornell women's soccer team a 1-0 lead late in the first half, but Princeton knotted the score before halftime and scored the game-winner with 4:04 to play in the first overtime as Cornell dropped a 2-1 contest to Princeton on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field.
Kalie Bartholomew scored the game-winner for Princeton, which improved to 9-6 on the year and 4-2 in Ivy League play. Cornell dropped to 6-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league action.
Cornell got on the board first when Chitanvis, guarded by a pair of Princeton defenders, stopped with the ball, composed herself and fired a shot between the two that beat Princeton goalkeeper Kristin Watson to her right at the 42:26 mark of the first half. Princeton tied the score with 50 seconds remaining in the first half, however, when a cross was knocked into the Cornell goal by the Big Red defense, sending the two teams to the break tied at one.
A scoreless second half followed, though both teams had their chances at the game winner before the contest went into overtime. In the extra session, Cornell goalkeeper
Megan Bartlett made a pair of huge stops from point-blank range, but a loose ball after a corner kick would prove to be the game's decisive play.
The ball was briefly cleared out of danger by the Big Red defense, but Erika Hoglund was able to slip a pass to Bartholomew, who hammered the ball into the back of the net to give Princeton the victory.
Bartlett made six saves in taking the loss for Cornell, while Watson stopped five Cornell shots in the victory for Princeton.
Cornell closes out the season on Saturday, Nov. 6, when it plays host to Dartmouth in a 4 p.m. contest at Berman Field. That game will serve as the final home game for Cornell's two seniors,
Katie Hayes and
Lena Russomagno.
