ITHACA, N.Y. -- A four-goal first period was more than enough offense for the Cornell women's hockey team as the Big Red defeated Quinnipiac, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. The win keeps Cornell unbeaten in ECAC Hockey play at 6-0 and moved Cornell to 8-1 overall on the year. Quinnipiac fell to 9-6-1 overall and 4-5 in league action.

Hayley Hughes led the way with a goal and an assist on the day for the Big Red, while Amber Overguard, Chelsea Karpenko and Jessica Campbell each added a goal. Laura Fortino, Rebecca Johnston, Lauriane Rougeau and Catherine White each had an assist in the victory, with Amanda Mazzotta stopping all 18 shots she faced for her third shutout of the year and second this weekend.

For Quinnipiac, Victoria Vigilanti made 33 saves on 37 Cornell shots. The Bobcats were scoreless in both of their power-play chances, while Cornell was 1-for-2 on the power play.

Cornell got on the board at the 4:32 mark of the first period when Fortino circled around the Quinnipiac goal with the puck and sent a pass across the top of the crease, where Overguard was camped out on the weak side. The senior then flipped the puck into the net for what would be the eventual game-winner.

Just over a minute later, it was Karpenko who scored after taking a feed from Hughes on the left wing and popping a shot over the shoulder of Vigilanti. Campbell then scored off a pass from Johnston on a breakaway, crashing into the goal but not before the puck went into the back of the net. Hughes then capped the scoring with a power-play tally, with Rougeau sending a shot in from center point that White tipped onto the stick of Hughes, whose shot beat Vigilanti to cap the period with 1:04 to play.

From there, it was all defense, as Cornell held the Bobcats off the board on all 13 shots taken by Quinnipiac in the final two periods. Both of Quinnipiac's power play chances came in the second and third periods, and while Cornell allowed a pair of shots, Mazzotta was up to the challenge to post her second straight shutout.

Cornell returns to action on Friday when it steps out of league play for the start of a two-game series against Niagara. Friday's contest begins at 7 p.m. before the two teams battle on Saturday in a 2 p.m. contest.
