BOSTON, Mass. -- Darryl Partin scored 30 second half points, including 17 straight for Boston University at one point, as the preseason America East favorite Terriers rallied for a 66-61 victory over Cornell on Saturday afternoon at Case Gymnasium. Partin's effort overshadowed a career-high 22 points by Big Red junior Drew Ferry in his first Division I start. BU improved to 4-3, while the Big Red dropped to 2-4.
The Big Red had two chances to tie in the final minute, including the second time with three seconds remaining off an inbounds steal byu Chris Wroblewski. The junior made a fantastic defensive play in the corner on the pass, then found Ferry for a last-second heave. Ferry's off-balance shot was well short and rebounded by the Terriers, who hit a pair of free throws to provide the final margin.
Ferry hit six 3-pointers en route to his 22 points, while senior Adam Wire posted 12 points, a game-high nine rebounds, three steals and two assists. Wroblewski notched nine points, eight assists, four rebounds and two steals. Cornell turned the ball over just 11 times, but four came during the Terriers' 20-5 run. The last 17 points during the run were scored by Partin.
Partin ended his night 10-of-14 from the field and 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Without his hot shooting, the Terriers hit on just 8-of-35 shots (.229). As it was, the home team made just 37 percent of its efforts, continuing a string of trememndous Cornell defense. The team's only two double figure scorers entering the game, John Holland and Jake O'Brien, were limited to 14 total points on 3-of-20 shooting.
The first half was either a defensive clinic or an offensive disaster for both teams, depending on the viewer's focus. Cornell, holding for the last shot after a Terrier turnoverwith 36 seconds remaining, got just that. Wroblewski, scoreless to that point, dribbled out top until six seconds remained. He faked a drive into the lane and pulled up for a 3-pointer. The shot hit the front and back rim before dropping in as the horn sounded, sending the visitors into the locker room with a three-point advantage.
Wire was Cornell's answer in the first half, scoring nine points, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key for one of the seven first half lead changes. The Big Red shot jusut 35 percent from the floor, but turned the ball over just four times. The Terriers were limited to 31 percent shooting before the break. Wroblewski added four assists and jusut one turnover in the first half. Holland, BU's leading scorer and a two-time All-America East pick, was just 2-of-6 from the floor at the break.
After leading by as many as seven after a Figini trey made it 35-28 with 14:02 left on the clock, BU answered with its run. Cornell never wilted, going on an 11-1 run of its own capped with consecutive 3-pointers by Ferry, the last putting the Big Red ahead 49-48 with 5:38 left on the clock. A pair of free-throws by Holland, who had 11 points on the day, pushed the Terriers back into the lead for good. Ferry's sixth and last trey came after a Mark Coury tip-in, cutting a six-point Terrier lead to one (58-57) with 1:06 remaining. The teams traded free throws, but Ferry couldn't convert on either of his two tying opportunities in the final 20 seconds as the Big Red dropped its third straight contest, all three coming by a combined 10 points.
The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 30 when it meets No. 9/10 Syracuse at 7 p.m. from the Carrier Dome.
