ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell University men's polo team got back on the winning track, earning a perfect 2-0 record with a 31-3 triumph over Skidmore on Friday, then picked up a convincing 22-10 triumph over Connecticut. Cornell improved to 3-1 with the victories.
The men were coming off a disappointing loss at home to UConn last weekend. Seniors
Steven True,
Max Constant, and
David Dunstan started against Skidmore on Friday and showed their experience by taking control of the younger Thoroughbred squad and cruising to a 10-2 halftime lead. For the second half,
Branden Van Loon,
Connor Pardell and
Justin Schick flexed their muscles by doubling the Big Red's score in third chukker to 20 goals heading into the fourth. They added 11 in the fourth and coasted to the 31-3 win. It was a nice defense of the team's home turf, but the men had a bigger agenda as their second game of the weekend was to be a marquee matchup on Sunday against the Huskies in Connecticut.
After spotting the Huskies a 10-1 lead before almost coming all the way back in an 18-17 loss, the Big Red got off to a much better start in this one. Costant, Pardell and Van Loon, were determined to return the favor and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. UConn woke up and climbed back to take a 4-3 edge on a two-point foul shot, and the game was on. The Big Red answered by running off four straight goals before the Huskies would respond with one to end the first chukker with Cornell up 7-5. The Huskies tied the game at the beginning of the second at 7-7 before Cornell then ran off seven straight times to lead 14-7 heading into the last minute of the chukker and led 15-8 at the break.
Feeling better than the previous week, the Big Red vowed not to let up in the third. A defensive war broke out in the third as the teams traded a pair of goals and headed to the fourth with the score 17 – 10. Cornell was very aware that they had come back in the fourth the previous weekend when they were down by eight and nearly pulled off the win, and this time wanted to close the door on the Huskies swouldn't return the favor.Cornell shut out UConn in the fourth and added five goals of its own to bring home the 22-10 victory. Constant led all scorers with 13 goals.
