ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams will play their biggest home games of the 2009-10 season thus far, hosting defending national champion Virginia on consecutive nights this weekend. The women will be up first on Friday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Oxley Equestrian Center, while the men will meet the Cavaliers on Saturday, Feb. 13, with a 7:30 p.m. start.
The men's teams have played at least twice in each season dating back to the 1978-79 season, with Virginia leading 57-39-2. The Cavaliers won all four meetings between the teams a season ago, handing Cornell four of its five losses on the year. Cornell's last victory came in 2007-08, a 16-15 nail-biter in the national semifinals. The two squads met earlier this season in Charlottesville, Va., on Oct. 30, with UVa taking home a 19-8 victory.
The Cornell women bring a perfect 11-0 record into the second meeting of the season between the teams. Cornell holds a slim 10-9 edge in the last 19 meetings, but the Big Red leads the series 83-26-2. The Big Red knocked off Virginia 17-14 on Oct. 31 in Charlottesville, Va. behind 11 goals from Lizzie Wisner.
